Elmer is a finite element software package for multiphysical problems licenced under GPL. The core of Elmer is the finite element solver - ElmerSolver - which includes modern numerical methods and a wide selection of different physical models. Additionally Elmer includes a graphical user interface (ElmerFront), visualization tool (ElmerPost) and a simple mesh creation and manipulation utility (ElmerGrid). Also other tools may be used for pre- and postprocessing. Elmer is maintained and developed by CSC, the Finnish IT Center for Science.

For fluid flow ElmerSolver uses a stabilized (SUPG or residual free bubbles) Navier-Stokes equation. Elmer is suited for incompressible and compressible low mach number flows. For turbulent flows Elmer includes some RANS models. The fluid flow may have coupling to thermal, electrostatic, magnetostatic or structural phenomena. Also free surface phenomena may be accounted for. Elmer may be used also in parallel and good scaling has been achieved up to hundreds of processors.
