TitleDNS of plastic micro-partIcle distribution induced by sea waves
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerUniversity of Genoa
LocationItaly, Genoa
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateWednesday, December 18, 2024
Description:
JOB DESCRIPTION
Motivation
The post-doc position is conceived in the context of the National (PRIN) Project MARINE DUST, which is motivated by the problem of predicting the fate of plastic microscopic particles (MPs) and harmful micro-algae in the coastal environment.
A DETAILED DESCRIPTION of the project can be found at http://http://www3.dicca.unige.it/~markom/home/marine_dust.html

Objectives
• The effect of the turbulent boundary layer on the evolution of progressive non-breaking waves will be investigated by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). The flow field will be evaluated for different wave parameters, considering both smooth and wavy bottom surfaces. HPC resources are currently available on LUMI (https://www.lumi-supercomputer.eu/).
• In such flow conditions, the motion of Lagrangian buoyant particles will be explored by using both DNS and laboratory experiments with the objective of modelling the particle dynamics and improving the capability to predict the concentration of MPs and micro-algae. The mass transport and the presence of particle concentration patterns at the free surface will also be object of the
present study.

Cooperation
The research activity will be carried out in cooperation with the other units involved in the project (La Sapienza University -Rome- and the University of Catania -Sicily-) where complementary numerical and experimental investigations are planned.

Start
The job will START IN FEBRUARY 2025.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Essential
PhD in Mechanical, Civil, Environmental Engineering or in Physics or in Applied Mathematics. VERY GOOD knowledge of fluid dynamics, turbulence, numerical methods and modelling. EXCELLENT English proficiency. VERY GOOD skills in C/Fortran and Matlab/Python programming. GOOD experience of parallel computing on HPC systems.

Additional
GOOD experience of parallel programming, GOOD knowledge of particle and granular suspension dynamics would be a plus.
