TitlePhD positions: Turbulent Environmental Flows
CategoryJob in Academia
EmployerLehigh University
LocationUnited States, Pennsylvania, Bethlehem
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, February 01, 2024
Description:
The Multiscale Fluid Dynamics and Turbulence Lab at Lehigh University has
immediate openings for 2 PhD students to work on theoretical modeling and high-
fidelity numerical simulations of turbulent environmental flows. The students
will be part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh
University. We offer competitive salaries and benefits including health
insurance, conference travel opportunities, and professional development.
The positions open are for the following projects:

1) Wave-structure interaction in coupled oceanic and atmospheric boundary layers
Despite recent advances in experimental and numerical studies on the interaction
of oscillating flows with submerged offshore structures, several key features
remain unexplained. These include wake vortex characterization for vortex-
induced vibrations, wave-current interactions, and a physics-based theory for
force coefficients used in Morison's equation for turbulent flows subject to
flow separation. This project seeks to uncover these complex interactions and
develop a sea-state-dependent model to calculate critical impact loads in
designing marine structures.

2) Particle transport under waves in the ocean mixed layer
Settling particles in a turbulent fluid depends on critical parameters such as
inertia and shape and is subject to complex processes such as aggregation and
dissolution. These particles can further move through stratification and
turbulence, resulting in non-trivial effects. The project will involve
developing Eulerian-Lagrangian models to study particle transport of non-
spherical particles in the ocean.

Requirements

    a) Holds an MSc degree (or almost completed) in mechanical or aerospace
engineering, applied mathematics, or in a related engineering discipline.
    b) Has experience in computational fluid dynamics, machine learning, 3D
modeling, preferably from a programming perspective.
    c) Has good software development skills. Experience with C++ is beneficial.
    d) Has excellent oral and written communication skills.
    e) Has an affinity for working in multi‐disciplinary teams in a diverse and
       collaborative environment.

Please apply for the position by sending your CV and past research experiences
(if any) to aiyer@lehigh.edu by stating the job ID and the phrase "PhD
applicant" in the subject line. Applications from women in STEM and
underrepresented categories are especially encouraged.
